The Opening of Abbeydale Boys Grammar School - Sheffield 23rd July 1959

One of the first articles I posted to this site was one that related to the time I spent at Abbeydale Boys Grammar School in the late 1960's. Over the years a few "old boys" have contacted me with their recollections of the school. In May 2010 one of them contacted me again and said that he had in his possession a copy of a brochure that was published to mark the official opening of the school in July 1959. He kindly forwarded me a copy of the brochure which I have reproduced.

It is also rather fitting that I came into possession of this information. As I predicted many years ago, the school (now Abbeydale Grange) is to be closed down this summer (July 2010) as it is deemed by the local authority and national government to be a failing school . The proverbial writing has been on the wall for many years - over sixty acres of prime residential building land in one of Sheffield's "leafy suburbs" was just too tempting for the perennially cash-strapped city council. And so in many ways the brochure has become a historical document that illustrates an era the like of which we will never see again. Three Cheers??
