Crawnant Fach, Llanwrthwl ,Breconshire  Annie`s Place of birth  - 2007

Ann Thomas gave birth to an illegitimate child at Brynbedw, Llanwrthwl on 30th April 1871. When she emigrated the child was with Ann's parents, Samuel and Ann, as the child appears on the 1881 census as a ten year old granddaughter.

ANN THOMAS married FRANK TUCKER in Cardiff Wales circa 1874 .His parents were called George and Margaret Tucker - Frank himself was born in Somerset in 1848. Soon if not immediately after the marriage they emigrated to New South Wales Australia. Annie and Frank must have experienced considerable difficulties following their arrival in Australia. They moved around quite considerably in the years following their arrival. It is also worth noting the birth and death details of their first four children, her eldest son lived for thirteen years, her next three children never reached beyond two years of age. The two youngest daughters did survive however to adulthood.

Ann Thomas and Frank Tucker had the following children:

1. George F T Tucker was born 1876 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. He died 1889 in Waratah, New South Wales, Australia.

2. Charles Henry W Tucker was born 1878 in Lambton, New South  Wales, Australia. He died 1879 in Lambton, New South Wales, Australia.

(Henry was the son of Jules and Catherine Vlaeminck (Reg Year 1881 in the state of New South Wales - Ref No:10233) The couple had a daughter IDA MAY VLAEMINCK, who was born in 1911, Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia; IDA married. CLAUDE SAMUEL RODGERS in 1932 at Manly, New South Wales, Australia. Claude was the son of Robert John and Edith Maud Rodgers (nee Hickey) The couple had two children. IDA died on14th June 1994. Henry and Ida divorced. Her second husband was the son of Richard and Margaret McNamara (nee Tuohy)

(2) WILLIAM BERNARD MCNAMARA (born 1886) married Effie in 1919 in Glebe, New South Wales, Australia.

From the dates and places of birth it certainly shows the nomadic existence Ann and Frank had in in New South Wales.

However worse was to follow. On 30 March 1890 at Apple Tree Flat, Near Wallsend, New South Wales Frank died from injuries he accidentally received from a collision on the Wallsend railway line. He was 42 at the time and his occupation was Brickmaker. He was buried two days later on 1st April at Sandgate. Annie was left a widow with two young daughters aged five and two.

There is a contemporary report in the Wallsend and Plattsburg Sun newspaper dated 2nd April 1890.that gives further details of the tragedy

"On Saturday evening a Trolley and Coal Truck collided near the New Wallsend Pit causing a Mrs Taylor to be killed instantly. Another woman named Mrs Davies and a man named Frank Tucker were so seriously injured that they died the following morning. Two other men, Joseph Collins and Alexander Davidson with some children were on the trolley, but seeing impending danger, they jumped off and thus saved their lives.  An inquest was held and a verdict of accidental killed was returned.

The verdict or finding recorded in the Index for Coroners inquests 1887-1894, Folio 372 of reel 2925,NSW  State records Office, records Frank Tucker as 42 years old.  " Effects of injuries accidentally received through having been thrown off a trolley"

From the information that has been supplied to the family from researchers it looks as though Annie opened a roadside cafe and then a restaurant. After selling them she purchased a hotel.
