FREDERICK SANBY (1856 - 1931) and ELIZABETH SANBY nee WILDGOOSE (1859 - 1929)

From the information I obtained from the 1871 Census in November 2003 I confirmed that FREDERICK SANBY was my great grandfather EDWIN's twin brother. The 1881 Census reveals the following information with regard to Frederick.

Dwelling: 130 Eyre Lane
Census Place: Sheffield, York, England

Elizabeth SANBY Married 21 Female Sheffield, York, England

Eliza Ann SANBY U 2 Female Sheffield, York, England
Rel: Daughter
Elizabeth SANBY U 5 months Female Sheffield, York, England

This is consistent with the information that I have been able to obtain elsewhere. A FREDERICK SANBY was married in the June quarter of 1878 in the Ecclesall Bierlow (Ref 9c Page 313) area of Sheffield. His wife's maiden name was  ELIZABETH WILDGOOSE. There is a record of a Elizabeth Wildgoose being born in the June quarter of 1859 (Sheffield Vol 9C Page283). this would tie in with the information I have but before I can make any firm conclusions, further research is needed.

The 1891 Census reveals that the family were living at 109 Walkley Crescent, Walkley Sheffield  - (Ref RG 12/3796 Page 19)

The 1901 Census reveals that the family had moved but still remained in the district.

They were living at 36 Compton Street Walkley Sheffield  - (Ref RG 13/4343 Page 21). The eldest daughter had left home but there is an entry in the 1901 Index for an ELIZA SANBY aged 22 who was employed as a Warehouse Woman.

Herbert SANBY's  GRO reference is Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9C Page 362 and he was born in the September quarter of 1892. He subsequently married a ANNIE WAINWRIGHT (Marriages June 1914 quarter Sanby Herbert Wortley Volume 9c Page 609).

They in turn also had a son called HERBERT. (Births Sanby Herbert Mar 1916 quarter Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9c page 713) and a daugher IRENE (Births December 1919 quarter Sanby Irene Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c Page 834)

Herbert's older sister AGNES married a WILLIAM H WILDBORE (Marriages September 1913 Wildbore William H Sanby Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c page 87a). There is a possibility that William's second name MAYBE HENRY and that he was circa 29 years of age when he married

The following year 1902 saw the death of their second eldest daughter ELIZABETH. There is an entry in the Burial Register for St Mary's Church in Walkley, Sheffield that states that ELIZABETH SANBY was buried in St Mary's Cemetery Walkley Sheffield on 10th March 1902 aged 21. Her address was given as 36 Compton Street, Walkley, Sheffield . There is also an entry for ELIZABETH's death in the March quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9C Page 230.

Elizabeth's was the first burial in the grave. The next is the grandson of Frederick and Elizabeth. WILLIAM FREDERICK ALBERT GODWIN who died on June 25th 1902, three months after Elizabeth. WILLIAM was just four months and three weeks old. I am convinced that WILLIAM was the baby son of Elizabeth's eldest sister ELIZA ANN who as we have noted left the household prior to the 1901 Census. There is a record of a ELIZA ANN SANBY marrying a ARTHUR WILLIAM GODWIN in the September quarter of 1901 (Ecclesall Bierlow GRO reference Volume 9C Page 696)

WILLIAM GODWIN's birth is also recorded in the Index's  as William Frederick A GODWIN - Ecclesall Bierlow - March quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Vol 9C Page 421. and so sadly is his death Ecclesall Bierlow - September quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Volume 9C Page 222.

Incidentally the only reference I can find to date of a ARTHUR GODWIN in Sheffield is in the 1901 Census. He is recorded as a 19 year old "Bombardier S Artillery" who was born in Kingston, Surrey.

The third burial in the grave was that of Frederick and Elizabeth's fourth child and second son WALTER SANBY. The gravestone records that WALTER died on April 19th 1915 at the age of 28. It also notes that WALTER "was the beloved husband of FLORENCE SANBY". I believe that the couple got married in the March quarter of 1912. There is a record of a FLORENCE S WELLS marrying a WALTER SANBY ( Ecclesall Bierlow GRO reference Vol 9C Page 424). The couple could have only been married just three years before Walter died.

The tragedy of Walter's death is exacerbated by the fact that the couple had a young son

The last two burials in the grave were those of ELIZABETH and FREDERICK respectively. ELIZABETH died on March 13th 1929 at the age of 70. According to the inscription ELIZABETH SANBY "was worthy of everlasting remembrance". Her husband FREDERICK died just over two years later on 22nd May 1931 at the age of 75
