THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH WOOD 1861-1896 ESSEX - SHEFFIELD
My great grandmother FLORENCE SHIRT nee WOOD was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Wood nee Speed. As I noted at the time, Joseph was unusual in as much as his birthplace is in Essex, or to be more precise Brentwood. This is a first on my maternal grandmother's side of the family as nearly everyone I've located to date was born in or near Sheffield.
I was not particularly hopeful of finding much more out about Joseph's origins, but after some research I believe that I have located the family in the 1871 UK Census - RG10/1657 page 201 - Ingrave Essex
| NAME | STATUS | AGE | SEX | BIRTHPLACE | OCCUPATION |
| George WOOD | Married | 42 | Male | Ingrave,Essex,England | Agricultural Labourer |

| Henry WOOD | Son | 7 | Male | Mountnessing,Essex,England | Scholar |
| Walter WOOD | Son | 5 | Male | Ingrave,Essex,England | Scholar |
The reason why I am more or less certain it is the right family is as a result of the 1881 Census. Joseph was living at 38 Sarah Street Sheffield at the time with his wife and young daughter. However his parents are still registered as living in Ingrave, Essex. - with a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.
