REES (1853 -  and MARY THOMAS nee Jones (1854 - 1902) 

Rhys (Rees) Thomas was born on the 25th February 1853,  in Crawnant Fach, Llanwrthwl, Breconshire to my great grandparents Samuel Thomas and Ann Lewis and was the elder brother of my great grandmother Elizabeth . He married a woman called MARY JONES on 1st June 1877 at the Register Office in Bulith Wells ( Mary was born in Llwynypia, Rhondda 1854). It was witnessed by Evan Jones the brides father and William Thomas the grooms brother. At the time of the marriage Rees was employed as a labourer. 

Rhys and Mary had the following children from the marriage:-

1. Laura Hannah P Thomas born June Qrt 1878 Vol 11b Page 104 at Builth Brecknock, married John Daniel [Jack] Mathias born circa 1876 in Monmouthshire, They married in the March Qrt 1898 Vol 11a Page 617 at Pontypridd.  The 1901 census for number 5 Ynyscynon Road, Trealaw, Rhondda, shows Laura a married mother living with her parents.

Margaret Mathias Daughter 9mns.

Rees and Mary moved shortly after to 100 North Road, Porth, but within a year Mary had died. Mary Thomas (nee Jones) died on the 2nd Jan 1902 said to be 54 years old on the Interment but she is registered in Pontypridd Vol 11a Page 299 aged 53, dying Porth, and was buried on the 7th January 1902 in Trealaw Cemetery Grave No G135.

Laura and Jack Mathias later lived in either Stapleford or Sandiacre in Derbyshire. One daughter lived in London, one in Somerset, and the third lived at home with her parents. Of the sons Arthur Mathias emigrated to Alberta, Canada, and became an executive of a Telephone and Electric corporation. I have no details on the other son.
