THE SANBY FAMILY IN SHEFFIELD 1901

Ten years earlier in 1891 the Census Extracts reveal the following living at 386 SOUTH ROAD, WALKLEY in the Nether Hallam registration district of Sheffield. The data from the Census is given in the table below (Ref Ed 27 Folio 6 Piece 3798)

The main fact that stands out in the data is that George, now a widower, must have married and then lost his wife through bereavement at sometime between 1881 - 1891. There is a record of a GEORGE SANBY getting married in the June quarter of 1887 in Sheffield (PRO ref Vol9c Page 631).

There is a birth  of a GEORGE HENRY SANBY who died within months of being born (Birth - Ecclesall Bierlow March 1898 9C Page 418 - Death Sheffield June 1898 9C page 340). Still to check the baby's relationship with the family. 

But the marriage was short lived because on 16th April 1889 SARAH died at 16 Highton Street, Walkley, Sheffield. SARAH was just 24 years old.

The photograph was taken in 1906 and shows South Road. The road on the right is Freedom Road and the pub on the left is the Freedom House. My great great grandfather HENRY SANBY lived in the houses to the right of the photograph. In the late summer of 2005, I ascertained that HENRY SANBY lived until he was 77 years of age, dying in the December quarter of 1906 (PRO Ref  Death Ecclesall Bierlow Vol 9C page 194) 

Ten years later in 1901 HENRY SANBY (my great great grandfather) and his son GEORGE were living four doors away at 378 SOUTH ROAD Walkley Sheffield (Ref RG13/4344 Page 36). Jane had left the household in 1893 to marry ALFRED NALL.  George had not remarried in the intervening ten years.

In the Burgess Rolls (Register of Electors) for the South Road Polling District in 1921 there is an entry for GEORGE and a ALICE SANBY at 378 South Road.  George would have been 56 at the time the register was taken.

Married Alice FARR, on September 12, 1915, by Arthur E Duckett curate St Stephens Sheffield (Banns) at St Mary, Walkley. Father's name is Henry Sanby,deceased (Edge Tool Forger).
