PANIC ON GELL STREET - SHEFFIELD - 1883

"Terrible accident, Sheffield - children tampled to death"

The above illustration is taken from The Illustrated Police Gazette dated 14th July 1883

The Manchester Guardian dated 3rd July 1883 carried a report of the tragedy which happened in the afternoon of Monday 2nd July 1883

The Pall Mall Gazette dated Tuesday 3rd July 1883 also carried an abbreviated report of the accident but rather more surprisingly the Aberdeen Weekly Journal (Aberdeen, Scotland) dated Tuesday 3rd July 1883 added further details of the tragedy under the title STREET PANIC IN SHEFFIELD

The final report I have obtained is from The London Times dated 3rd July 1883

The Manchester Guardian dated 5th July 1883 gave a brief update under the title

FATAL PANIC IN SHEFFIELD

"The inquest on the bodies of Frederick Lawless and John Charles Summers the children killed in Sheffield on Monday during the passing of the procession of the Band of Hope Union was opened yesterday. Evidence of identification was taken, and the inquest adjourned for a week. All the injured children are doing well"

But the most detailed account I've been able to find to date is from The Illustrated Police Gazette dated 14th July 1883

The Sheffield and Rotherham Independent dated Thursday 14th July 1883 reported on the resumed Inquest

The Scene of the Accident - Gell Street - Glossop Road October 2009
