Annie Shaw's Funeral - City Road Cemetery Sheffield 1936
The burial registers for Sheffield's City Road Cemetery include the following entry
Shaw, Annie (Daughter of Harry, age 13).
Died at 167 Henry St; Buried on January 4, 1936 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 20333, Section B6 of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Shaw, Walter (Labourer, age 76).
Died at 15 Penrith Rd; Buried on November 14, 1938 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 20333, Section B6 of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
I am not sure of the relationship between the two persons in the grave but given the ages they may well be grand-daughter and grandfather.
Anyway the death of Annie and her burial on Saturday 4th January 1936 caused a furore which resulted in police being summoned to the funeral. I am uncertain as to why they were seven funerals taking place on that day and at that time but my guess is that they all may have been infants and/or children. I am also unsure as to the cause of Annie's death
The Courier and Advertiser dated 6th January 1936 also carried a report
The Communist official at the centre of the dispute with the Reverend V. S Daws was a Mr G H Fletcher - George Henry Fletcher. George was one of the leading lights in furthering the rights of working class people in Sheffield, and was a prominent member of the British Communist Party from its inception.
There is an excellent article on George's life and struggles on Graham Stevenson's Blog and Website which I would encourage you to read. There is also a book Leaven Of Life The Story of George Henry Fletcher which is a biography of George's life. I have yet to read or even see it.
