MRS WHITELY WAS BURNT TO A MERE CINDER - COBDEN VIEW CROOKES SHEFFIELD 1875
I first came across this incident in The Liverpool Mercury dated 10th February 1875
As Cobden View Road is not far from where I live I thought that I would try and find out more about the incident. Fortunately the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent dated 10th February 1875 gave a fuller account of the incident which took place the previous day
I was then able to find out details of the Inquest which took place at the Cobden View Hotel, which incidentally is still there. The practice of holding Inquests in local inns and similar premises was commonplace at the time. It was mainly done as a matter of convenience for all those involved, and the practice only died out after 1901
The verdict of Accidental Death was only to be expected, and two days later MARY WHITELY or rather what little was left of her was interred at the local church of St Thomas's. Mary was 74 years old at the time of her death
Court No 10 Cobden View Road was demolished many years ago, and replaced by social/council housing
