Winifred Spooner's Wedding Day - Sheffield
If you walk around Sheffield's City Road you will come to the following grave
Spooner, Winifred (wife of Albert, age 71).
Died at 97 Heeley Green; Buried on March 1, 1939 in Roman Catholic ground;
Grave Number 4894, Section HH of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Spooner, Albert (Retired, age 78).
Died at 2 Herries Road; Buried on June 21, 1946 in Roman Catholic ground;
Grave Number 4894, Section HH of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Winifred died over seven years earlier than her husband Albert, and was buried on Wednesday 1st March 1939.
A check on the Free BMD site reveals that the couple were
married for fifty years

But quite by chance whilst I was researching another article at the local studies archive4 I came across the following newspaper report in The Star dated 28th February 1939. Winifred did in fact die on the day of her Golden Wedding Anniversary - Sunday 26th February 1939. She had married Albert on 28th February 1889 at what was then Sheffield's Parish Church ( now The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul, Sheffield).
Rather a sad and poignant end to a marriage!
