Gran Worked For Uncle - Attercliffe 1911

When I was researching my ancestors in the 1911 Census, I was unable to find any entry for my grandmother ROSE SANBY. I knew that by the time of the census she had lost both her parents Mary Sanby in 1904 and Edwin Sanby in 1910, and thought that she may have gone to live with other members of the family. But a long search of the indexes failed to locate my gran.

Thankfully a member of my family eventually found the entry in the 1911 Census. Instead of ROSE SANBY, my gran is transcribed as a ROSE LANBY. The sanby name has had many variants but this was a new one on me!

The reason for the transcription error was the writing of the head of the household - his S looked like a L

And so in 1911 my gran was a general domestic servant in the house of a 60year old pawnbroker HAROLD TYRER. She was undoubtedly under the supervision of MRS ANNIE BROOKS, a 35 year old housekeeper who was widowed. It is funny but I can remember my gran telling me she was in service when she was young but at the time I did not know what she meant by the term.

The address  is given as 481 Attercliffe Road Attercliffe Sheffield which is someway from where my gran was brought up - Walkley.

In fact HAROLD had goner into business with his younger brother EDWIN DAVIES TYRER and were trading as TYRER BROTHERS. Edwin was living with Harold in 1881 but later married and moved out of premises The business lasted well into the twentieth century as the trade directories of the time show (see notes). In fact it seems to have prospered.

Edwin died in 1917 aged 65 ( Deaths Dec 1917 Tyrer Edwin D 65 Ecclesall B. 9c 467) whilst his elder brother HAROLD died aged 75 in 1926 (Deaths Mar 1926
TYRER Harold J 75 Ecclesall B. 9c 531)

I do not know when my gran left service but the indications are that she took war work in the local munitions factories that mushroomed in Sheffield after the declaration of war in August 1914.

If anyone can supply me with any additional information on the Tyrer Brothers and their activities please contact me

Oh and for those that don't know, Uncle is a slang term for a "pawnbroker"
