THE FAMILY OF FANNY WARD nee DOUBLEDAY - SHEFFIELD
In November 2014 I was working in Walkley Cemetery (Friends of Walkley Cemetery). The section we were clearing was section B and during the course of the clearance I came across the family grave of Thomas Ward. (It was in the same row as that of the Wells family who son Walter died in France in 1917). I was intrigued by the part-inscription "Late Colour Sergt 84th Regt" My colleague mentioned that he had been in correspondence with a descendent of Thomas in regard to locating family graves in the cemetery.
"I would like to try and locate some Doubleday graves in the
cemetery to assist my genealogical research:
Sarah Ann Clark d 1904 nee Doubleday age 66
Fanny Turfit Doubleday Ward d 1916 age c 77 and her husband Tom Ward d 1893 (born Ireland)
Benjamin Doubleday (b 1812) d 1898 and his wife Harriet Harborough Doubleday 1816-1884
I contacted the descendent and sent a photo of the cleared grave and asked permission to use details for this article. The reply I received was beyond my expectations. Here is a copy of Fanny's birth certificate

She was the daughter of BENJAMIN and HARRIET DOUBLEDAY nee HARBOROUGH. The 1841 Census has the family living in London Road Newark Nottinghamshire with Benjamin being employed as a Saddler.

Ten years later the family had moved to Newport in Yorkshire. This time the family were lodging with a Jane Ellis who is listed as a confectioner. There was also an addition to the DOUBLEDAY family. Thomas who was born in 1850 in Clerkenwell, London

By 1861 The family had moved back to Sheffield and were living in Lambert Street which is ion the Westbar - Shalesmoor district, But unlike the previous census in 1841 and 1851, Benjamin is listed as a "collar and harness maker". Fanny had left the family to marry Thomas Ward in 1859.

The address they were living at in 1871 was Russell Street Sheffield which is just a few streets away from their previous address in Lambert Street. Benjamin had reverted to being a "saddler" again

Ten years later in 1881 the family had moved to Dorking Street which is in the Burngreave area of Sheffield, and barely two miles away from their previous addresses in Shalesmoor. The only person living with them was their son Benjamin who was 25 years old and working as a "plotting agent". And that is the last time HARRIET is the census because on 17th September 1884 she died in Matlock, Derbyshire, England and four days later on the 21st she was buried there. I am unsure why HARRIET died and was buried there.

And the last time that BENJAMIN appear in the census is in 1891and was living as a widowed lodger in the house of JOSEPH and ALICE STOCKS in Moses Street Sheffield. Benjamin did not have an occupation. He was 76 years of age. But he did not die there. He lived to be 82 years of age and died at 174 Walkley Crescent Rd in June 1898 and is buried in Walkley Cemetery

[name/date of burial/address or place where death occurred/age/minister]
The plans of the Cemetery suggest that this grave has no gravestone, but it is in an overgrown area, so it is possible that there is low or fallen stonework which has been missed.
The THOMAS DOUBLEDAY that is buried in plot A341 along with his father, BENJAMIN was born in London. BENJAMIN and HARRIET set up a saddlers business in St John Street, Clerkenwell close to Smithfield and the skin market. Sadly it was just one of the many failed business attempts that saw them move around the country from Lincolnshire to London to Yorkshire to Sleaford to London and then back to Sheffield where they stayed. They never had the same address in any of the censuses
THOMAS (Harborough) DOUBLEDAY worked as a glazier and a labourer. His wife was a cook, the sons blacksmiths and a gas fitter. There was a problem with TB in the family. Poignant that of all the burials in the grave, Ben's name is not commemorated with carved initials.
"Thomas Ward is connected to the Doubleday family through marriage to a daughter of
Benjamin (Fanny - Fanny Turfitt Doubleday), and sibling to Thomas and Benjamin, my G-G grandfather,
. Another sister who lived with her in the early years of marriage and after Thomas died, Sarah Ann Clarke nee Doubleday is also buried with them. The house at
74 Walkley Crescent Road was hers and Thomas' house, and from the 1911 census we can see it had 6 rooms."
