Fanny Gibbins - A Burning Tragedy - Spring Hill Sheffield 1903

The 1901 census carried this entry for 21 Spring Hill Crookes Sheffield. It was the home of Thomas Henry Gibbins' family

The report that appeared in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph dated 18th December 1903 also refers to the Gibbins family but it is not the one in the 1901 census. This family is also called Gibbins but the husband was called HENRY GIBBINS and his wife FANNY GIBBINS. There is a record of their marriage

The couple had a child DOROTHY GIBBINS - Births Dec 1901 Gibbins Dorothy Ecclesall Bierlow. 9c 431. Dorothy is briefly mentioned in the report that chronicles the events that led to her mothers death

The verdict was in accordance with the evidence. It should be pointed out that according to the death certificate and burial record FANNY was 34 and not 24 at the time of death. This means that FANNY was 32 at the time DOROTHY was born, rather late for a first child in Edwardian times. Were her "nervousness" and "low spirits" the signs of post-natal depression.? Perhaps so, HENRY's sister FLORENCE was in the house at the time of the accident. She fetched the baby (Dorothy) from Fanny's room at 9.00am which seems to indicate that Fanny's sister in law took at least some part in looking after Dorothy.
