Death in the Old Mans Hut - John Holland Abbeyfield Park Sheffield 1938
I came across this cutting in The Daily Independent dated 18th January 1938. It seems rather sad that John should end his life in such a way but at least he was in a place which he knew and was no doubt with friends.
I found John and his family in the 1901 Census living in 17 Bernard Terrace (Bernard Terrace ran off the east side of Denholme St, between numbers 26 & 28 Denholme Street in the West Brightside District of Sheffield).
Ten years later the family were living at 304 Ellesmere Road Pitsmoor Sheffield, an address that John was still living at when he died 37 years later!
I noticed that John was still working with the Midland Railway as a Sidings Poter and that his two sons had also joined their father in working for the same company. The eldest son John (20) was a lamp-man whilst his 16 year old brother Ernest was a messenger.
But sometime after the census Ernest must have joined the armed services for their is a record of a Private Ernest Hollland of the Royal Marine Light Infantry losing his life on 1st November 1914
Name: Ernest Holland

It is definitely John's son who died on the HMS Monmouth which sank off the coast of Chile in what was known as The Battle of Coronel. Until I started this article I had never heard of this naval action but thankfully there is a marvelous on-line resource "The Coronel Memorial" that details the battle and its tragic aftermath. It was the Royal Navy's first defeat in over one hundred years - two armoured cruisers were lost and over 1600 men lost their lives
The Yorkshire Telegraph and Star dated 14th November carried this notice in its BMD Column
A year later The Yorkshire Telegraph and Star carried this notice in its "In Memorium" column. It appeared on November 1st 1915, a year to the day since Ernest lost his life. The grief is palpable "Missed by those that loved him best - Father Mother Brothers and Sisters"
Ernest is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial
As for Ernest's parents they are buried in Sheffield's Burngreave Cemetery in a family grave. Their son Ernest has no known grave
