JOHN FARR - A VICTIM OF CAPITALISM - OCTOBER 1927 SHEFFIELD

John Farr lived in Sheffield all his life. The UK Census for the years 1881 - 1911 have enabled me to follow John's (Jim) life from a 13 year old spring knife cutler living in Weston Street which is in the St George's district of Sheffield to a 42 year old man living with his family at 45 Longfield Road, Crookes, Sheffield.

1881 Census - WRYRG11_4646_4649-0688

1891 Census - WRYRG12_3818_3821-0095

In 189 John married Sarah Ann ELLIS and a year later they had their first daughter Harriet. They were living in a court in Hoyle Street which is in the Shalesmoor district of Sheffield. His wife Sarah was a metal caster

1901 Census - YRKRG13_4360_4362-0504

By 1901 John and Sarah had two other children, Alice age 7 and John age 5. They were living in Trippett Lane which is in Sheffield's City Centre. John was still working as a spring knife cutler, and his wife Sarah, a Britannia metal caster.

1911 Census - RG14_27741_0393_03

By 1911 the family had moved to Crookes. Sarah Ann had stopped working, but John was still a spring knife cutler. His eldest daughter Harriet had left but their 2 younger children lived there.

Photo taken 12th June 1967 - Anlaby Street was off Penistone Road, almost opposite Rawson Street (which still exists) in an area called Hillfoot. This was one of a group of streets that ran from Penistone Road almost to the banks of the Don and the Loxley, in the vicinity of the Old Park Rolling Mills.

For the next sixteen years I do not know what happened to John and his family apart from the fact his son John was reported missing in May 1917 whilst serving as a private in the West Regiment. It was only after a few weeks that he was reported as being taken as a prisoner of war. He served out the rest of the conflict in a German POW camp.

The service record does confirm that his father was his next of kin and that at the time of enlistment he was living at 46 Anlaby Street off Penistone Road Sheffield. And is was at this address that John ended his life in October 1927. He was 58 years old and had been unable to obtain employment for six years.

The Manchester Guardian dated 15th October 1927 reported the following scene at John's funeral that took place the previous day

The Daily Independent dated 15th October 1927 had a bit more detail on what it termed "a strange procession"

Needless to say John was buried in a public grave, one he occupies with six infant children. This is his burial record
