THE MELSON FAMILY - SHEFFIELD

"Quis tali fundo tempret a lachymie" - Who could look upon this place and not weep" (Anon)

I came across the Melson family and in particular Gertrude Melson in Peter Warr's excellent book "Sheffield in the Great War." and given the nature of the reference, I decided it needed further research.

Marriage - 3rd June 1888 Sheffield Parish Church

1901 Census

1911 Census

The family lived in very poor working class areas of Sheffield - in 1901 they lived a 5 Canal Street and ten years later they were to be found living at in a back to back property in Powell Street which is behind Winter Street Hospital. At the time of the 1911 Census Tom and Jemima had ten children but only eight were still living. The two children who died were the twin daughters Mary and Jemima who died within days of being born in January 1905.

But this family was to experience even greater tragedy. The reference I made to their daughter Gertrude at the beginning of the article is reflected in this newspaper report of November 11th 1914 from the Sheffield Daily Independent

Gertie never read Princess Mary's letter - she died on 4th November 1914 age 16 - she had been crippled since the age of 5

But the family suffering was not over yet. In the following year their two sons John and Robert lost their lives on the Western Front within seven months of each other.

The next reference I have is from the 1939 National Register Which shows Tom and Jemima still living at 4, Wostenholme Place, Powell St., Sheffield with theit son Harry.

But nine months later Harry died in the nearby Winter street Hospital - he was 44 years of age. Tom and Jemima had lost six of their ten children. Tom died in May 1942 age 79 and Jemima died seven years later in July 1949. She died in the house that had witnessed some much tragedy.
