CHRIST CHURCH ATTERCLIFFE SHEFFIELD
My paternal grandparents Clem and Rose Hobbs nee Sanby were married in this church on 12th August 1918
The church was on Church Lane, just off Attercliffe Road, opposite the turn to Worksop Road - it was very badly damaged in the German blitz of December 1940 and was eventually demolished in 1953. The site is now a garden.
The Sheffield Daily Telegraph dated 17th July 1926 carried a
long article on the Church and its history - the reason being that in July
1926 the church celebrated its centenary. The building was constructed and
finally consecrated in 1826, Pawson and Brailsford’s Illustrated Guide to Sheffield (1868)
noted that
“There is a handsome church at Attercliffe, which is about two miles from the centre of town, on the Doncaster Road. Formerly Attercliffe was a detached village, but now it is practically a busy manufacturing suburb of Sheffield. It was opened in 1826, having been built by means of a Parliamentary grant, at the cost of £14,000. It is a Gothic building, with lancet windows and a handsome groined roof. It will accommodate from 1,100 to 1,200 persons.”
For the readers who want further information on the church there is an excellent article on Sheffielder.net. But this report covers not only the church but also religious life in Attercliffe in the centuries prior to the building of the church.
Attercliffe Chapel, also known as the Hill Top Chapel, is a Gothic chapel in Attercliffe. The chapel was constructed in 1629, when Attercliffe was a township separate from Sheffield, although in the same parish. Consecration took place on St. Matthias' day, 24 February 1630. By the 1840s, the chapel was used only for funeral services. The chapel, surrounded by its cemetery, and lying on the south bank of the River Don, was largely rebuilt in 1909, but retains its period atmosphere. It is Grade II listed. As of 2014, the Sheffield congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England and Wales meets at the Chapel.
