THE ALLOTMENTS OF SHEFFIELD

When I was posting my article on the life of my great grandfathers twin brother Frederick Sanby, I came across newspaper articles that referred to the growth of allotments in Sheffield at the turn of the twentieth century. In fact at the annual meetings that were held mostly in the Hallamshire House on Commonside in Sheffield, various speakers outlined the origins of allotments and the difficulties that they had in securing the land and necessary permissions for their development. The focus of the reports were of course on the Rivelin Valley but they also referred to Sheffield as a whole.

The reports also show that there was a keen interest from the local population and all the meetings and exhibitions that were held in the district were very well attended. The other point of note is that the vagaries of the weather in Sheffield was often commented on, usually unfavourably!
