Albany Hotel Fargate Sheffield

Sheffield Independent dated 1st August 1889

A pivotal moment in the Hotels history came in June 1903 when a serious fire broke out at the hotel. It was reported in the Daily Telegraph dated 9th  June 1903 and other newspapers of the time

But by far the most detailed account of the fire was in the Sheffield daily Telegraph dated 10th June 1903

I cannot be sure but years ago I read somewhere that the fire had made parts of the roof structurally unsafe and that led to the disappearance of its distinctive roofline and its rather bland replacement. But reading the report it appears that the fire was confined mainly to the roof due to extensive use of asbestos wire and iron in its construction.  I wonder if the fire in some way had degraded the asbestos wire and iron in the roof area. I believe that the Hotel was closed down in 1958 and became offices. The ground floor was the home of Yorkshire Bank but they also closed their doors a few years ago
