PRIVATE ARTHUR RICHARDSON (1920 - 1944)
In April 2005, I received the following e-mail from a Sjaak Arntz in the Netherlands
"On the internet I found your site with al kind of
information about Crookes, Sheffield.
I was looking for some information in relation to the remembrance of the victims
of the WW II. Near our village, Bergharen, The Netherlands, we remember a person
that came from Crookes.
It was a son of Fred and Gertrude Richardson, named Arthur. He died on
26-10-1944.
Please if you know something about him, will you let me know?"
I checked the details out on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and found the following

The only other information I have been able to obtain is that in 1925 Arthur's father, Fred Richardson was a manager and that in 1948, fours years after Arthur's death, his mother Gertrude was still living at 40 Clementson Road, Crookes, Sheffield.
Sjaak in a further e-mail added a bit more detail with regard to Arthur.
"On the 21. of June 1980 a man in our village became a visit of a certain Mr Olthof from Nijmegen and Tom Fleming, an old soldier. He told that he was October 1944 together with his companion "Joe Richardson" in Bergharen. This Fleming kept a diary during the war. It was clear that he was a witness of the dying of Joe Richardson. It is not clear why he has spoken of Joe. It is obvious clear that his name was "Arthur". It is on his grave that I visited last Sunday.

Sjaak is involved in the Remembrance Services that take place to honour and remember those who gave their lives for their country and would dearly like to hear from anyone who can furnish him with further information about Arthur. If you can help, please let me know

Arthur's family house - 40 Clementson Road, Crookes, Sheffield - it is the one with the maroon door in the centre. It is now a multiple let student property. The photograph was taken on 28th December 2005.
