The Funeral of Mr. David Ward J.P. 21st November 1889 Ecclesall Sheffield
I must admit that I had never hear of Mr. David Ward until I came across the report of his funeral in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph but he was the head of the largest edge tool firm in the world Payne and Ward. There is an excellent history of the firm on this blog.
The first report is from the Dundee Evening Telegraph - Tuesday 19 November 1889
SUDDEN DEATH OF AN EX-LORD MAYOR OF SHEFFIELD. Mr. David Ward, head of the largest edge tool firm in the world, and who bad been Mayor of Sheffield and Master Cutler, dropped dead yesterday afternoon at the Victoria Station, Sheffield, while about to catch a train to Lincoln, deceased gentleman was widely-knowu as a Director in many important commercial Companies, and was one of Sheffield’s most prominent citizens.
It was also widely reported in other regional newspapers.
But there is an account that appeared in the Evening Telegraph and Star in a special edition that gave the full description of the events that occurred that afternoon at the Victoria Station.
