"Gone to Derbyshire" - The Agonising Death of Miss Moore - Longshaw Etate, Derbyshre - July 1926

The Manchester Guardian dated 20th January 1927 carried the following report that was unusual to say the least. The Coroner remarked that the cause of death was the ingestion of Lysol and that this was the third case he had inquired about in the last two or three weeks. I had not heard of Lysol but it appears that it is a household disinfectant and anti-bacterial product. Lysol tends to be the term used in America whereas it is now marketed un the UK as Dettol.

But when I started to look into the life of Clara Florence Moore I could find mo trace of her in any research location. This was frustrating to say the least. Fortunately I did have, at the time. a subscription to the British Newspaper Archive and also the date of the inquest. After a few searches I found that Clara Florence Moore was in fact Sarah Florence Moore. The Manchester Guardian had printed in the report Clara and not Sarah. I can now put together the story of Sarah's life which was a sad one if the reports are correct.

The report in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph dated 20th January 1927. 1927 is an excellent summary of events that led up to Sarah's death in July 1926 and also after her body was discovered purely by chance six months later. The Longshaw Estate is a desolate place in winter and so for a police constable to spend the whole night guarding a corpse on his own is praiseworthy indeed.
