SPRING HILL, CROOKES, SHEFFIELD - 1881 CENSUS

The details that are listed below were extracted from the 1881 Census. The buildings that were uninhabited were in the process of being constructed

As an introduction to the section it is worth examining the information each householder was obliged to supply and the method used to collect it. He/she was to complete their individual household schedules recording who was in their household during the period Sunday night to Monday morning. On the following morning, the census enumerators collected the household schedules. If these were incomplete, the census enumerator was instructed to ask for extra details at the doorstep, although there is considerable evidence that this was not done uniformly. If the householder was unable to fill in the schedule e.g. due to illiteracy, the census enumerator was to complete it for them. These individual household schedules were then transcribed into the census enumerators' books, together with statistical information, and it is from these books that copies of the census returns can be obtained.

Column 1 No. of schedule, numbered from 1 consecutively per book
Column 2 Name of street, place or road, and name or number of house
Column 3 Houses; separate columns for inhabited and uninhabited or being built (entered as 'U' or 'B')
Column 4 Name and surname
Column 5 Relationship to head of family
Column 6 Condition; marital status
Column 7 Age last birthday; separate columns for males and females
Column 8 Rank, profession or occupation
Column 9 Where born; county/place
Column 10 Whether 1 - Deaf & dumb, 2 - Blind, 3 - Imbecile or idiot, 4 - Lunatic

I have also managed to obtain from Sheffield FHS the Burial Registers for St Thomas Church at Crookes. Where there is additional information to that contained in the 1881 Census I have used italics
