FRED SIMPSON (1887 - 1935)

Fred SIMPSON was the eldest son of my wife's great grandparents JAMES and AMELIA SIMPSON. For many years I knew nothing of Frederick but in March 2008 I was contacted by a descendent who furnished me with a few more details. Up until then, the only reference I had of Fred was that he appeared alongside his family in the 1901 Census. I was told that Fred married a CLARA SELWOOD on 11th July 1906 at Wadsley Parish Church, a fact that was confirmed in the parish registers for the church. CLARA was the daughter of FREDERICK and CLARA SELWOOD (nee WELDON). CLARA was born in Sheffield (as was FREDERICK) on 23rd January 1887 and so she would have been nineteen at the time of her marriage

FREDERICK and CLARA had two children

1. Kate Amelia SIMPSON born 27th October 1906. Kate married a Robert Pritchard Sharkey on 16th December 1926 in Walkley Sheffield. I believe that at the time of their marriage Robert was in the British army and  was stationed at Hillsborough Barracks Sheffield.

2. James SIMPSON born 17th July 1908 at the Cuthbert Bank Hotel on Langsett Road, Sheffield.

Sadly the marriage did not last, CLARA died on 12th March 1911 at the tragically young age of 24. The cause of death was given as an intestinal obstruction and peronitis and a few days later she was laid to rest at Walkley Cemetery, Sheffield

Clara Simpson nee Selwood

From the information I received, it appears that Kate and James went to live with their grandparents in Walkley. As for Frederick, he remained a widower until he remarried in the September quarter of 1925. His second wife's name was BERTHA LAMING (GRO reference Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9C Page 859). They has a daughter MAY SIMPSON a year later, but she was only nine years of age when FRED died at the relatively young age of 47 on 25th March 1935.

Tragically MAY was only 16 of age when she died on 23rd September 1942. Fred's second wife BERTHA lived another 21 years before she passed away on April 20th 1963 aged 73 years old. She is buried alongside FRED, MAY and CLARA in the grave in Walkley Cemetery, Sheffield

The burial register for Walkley Cemetery Sheffield gives the following information
