ROSE SANBY'S BROTHERS AND SISTERS
"Memory is a golden chain, it binds till we meet again."
"Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear."
The photograph on the previous page reveals six children who I assume are my grandmother Rose's brothers and sisters but there is no actual confirmation that this is the case.
A 1891 Census Extract led me to the 1891 Census for the Nether Hallam registration district of Sheffield. My gran's family were living at 402 South Road, Walkley, Sheffield (PRO Ref RG12/3798)

Living with Albert was his twenty seven year old year old wife ALICE and his twenty year old brother EDWIN who was also a Steel Works Labourer. There were no children at the time but later that year on 5th November they had a daughter ALICE ADA SANBY. In late March 1916 they had another daughter ELSIE but she died at just three days old. She is buried alongside 14 others in a public grave in

In the Burgess Rolls (Register of Electors) for the Rivelin Polling District Spring 1921 there is an entry for Albert and Alice SANBY who were entered as living at 144 Bell Hagg Road in the Walkley district of Sheffield. Sadly ALICE died soon after the entry was made at the relatively early age of 37 on 24th April 1921. She is buried in the grave of her in-laws EDWIN and MARY SANBY in St Mary's Cemetery Walkley Sheffield. There is a birth in the registers for an ALICE MARSH in the March quarter of 1884 (PRO Ecclesall Bierlow Vol 9C Page 320) but at the moment I have no way of proving that this is the same person as Albert married.
Their daughter ALICE who lived at 144 Bellhagg Road, Walkley with her parents, married a WILLIAM OLDHAM in 1937 (an entry in Kelly's Directory of Sheffield and Rotherham 1972 gives Alice's husbands name as EDWIN OLDHAM. They later moved to 65 Marchwood Road, Stannington, Sheffield. In the photograph taken below, the front is inscribed "with love from Alice" and on the reverse it states "to Aunt Rose with love"
The 1939 National Register has this entry for Albert

"Peacefully at home on April 13th Florence aged 87 of 42 Steadfast Street, the beloved wife of William, loving mother of Albert and Vesta and a dear Grandma and Great-Grandma. Service and interment Tinsley Park Cemetery on Friday April 17th at 12.15 p.m."
The burial record states - "RICHARDSON Florence 17 Apr 1970 87 housewife 42 Steadfast Steet Sheffield 8A2738gp
The year was 1970 and so this confirms the year of birth as 1882 and so would have been an elder sister of my grandmother by eleven years. William ("Bill") incidentally died two years later on October 23rd 1972 and was cremated four days later on 27th October 1972
The notice in the local paper stated
"RICHARDSON - in hospital October 23rd aged 84 years of 7 Willington Road (late Steadfast Street) beloved husband of the late Florence, loving father of Albert and Vesta, loving Grandad of Donald and Leia and a darling great grandad. Service and cremation at City Road on Friday Oct 27th at 11.15 a.m. Flowers to and mourners meet B&C Suffolk Road "
The only other information I have to date is that in 1901 Florence was employed as a Sweet Machine Worker.
An entry in Kelly's Directory of Sheffield and Rotherham 1972 gives Albert and Vesta's address as 17 Follett Road Shiregreen Sheffield
The striking feature of this information I have found for FLORENCE is that she lived in 42 Steadfast Street Attercliffe Sheffield from possibly 1908 and definitely 1911 until her death in 1970, a total of 60 years. As the notice of her death states she rather fittingly died at home
Steadfast Street Attercliffe circa 1965
With regard to her family Beatrice married a GEORGE MOSS. This is a record of their marriage in June 1905. Prior to that the 1901 Census has Beatrice employed as a file cutter.

She is buried in Sheffield's City Road Cemetery

Their son GEORGE was born on 27th May 1910 and PEGGIE on 9th March 1920. In April 2021 I was informed that PEGGIE had been adopted and that she was born SARAH.
On Friday February 5th 1971 there appeared the following death notice in the Sheffield Star
MOSS - Peacefully in hospital on February 3rd (Wednesday) George aged 60 of 224 Elm Lane dearly loved husband of Hester, loving father of Pat and son-in-law Walt, dear grandad of Martin and Georgina and brother of Peggy received into St Patrick's R C Church Feb 8 at 7.00p.m. Requiem Mass on Tuesday 9th at 9.15 a.m Interment at Shiregreen Cemetery at 10.00 a.m. |
For a number of years I thought that this was the only photograph I'd got of GEORGE and HESTER MOSS. But in February 2008 I was contacted by a descendent of George and Hester who confirmed that a previously unidentified wedding photograph I had posted to another page was in fact the wedding of GEORGE and HESTER. The only information I had was on the reverse side of the photograph - a date 15th April 1933. The only other indication on the photograph is that it was taken outside the "Guild Room" which seems to point to the fact that the photo was taken at the Reception rather that at the Church. The descendent confirmed that this was the date of George and Hester's wedding. The lady to the right of the bride Hester, sat on the end, is ROSE GILLOWAY who was Hester's mother. As it is a wedding photograph, it is safe to assume that it is George's mother BEATRICE who is sat on the left. (The likeness between Beatrice and my gran Rose is remarkable)
The other interesting fact to emerge from the death notice is that George's funeral was a Roman Catholic one and this is the only one I've come across in the family to date although it is likely that there will be more. I was also informed that Beatrice's son GEORGE who incidentally was born on 27th May 1910 in Attercliffe, Sheffield (PRO Ref Sheffield Volume 9C page 714) lived with his parents Beatrice and George at 117 Stevenson Road Attercliffe Sheffield. His father also called George Moss is listed as a Carter. George showed great promise playing piano and at the age of 12/13 had passed all his exams from the Victoria College of London, thus allowing him to teach music He started to teach piano to Hester Gilloway who lived a few doors down at 111 Stevenson Road, and as a result a relationship developed that led to the above mentioned marriage at the Church of Emmanuel in Attercliffe Sheffield. The service was conducted by the vicar P.H.S. Rains and witnessed by Frank Billington and Kate Gilloway (Hesters sister). Kate was a bridesmaid and is on the wedding photograph.
The same descendent who supplied me with details of the photograph also stated
"It was Hester that had Catholic faith and I think that over time she converted George. That faith was also passed onto to their daughter Patricia, who went on to marry Walter Moore, also a Catholic, they married at St Patrick's, RC Church at Sheffield Lane Top. All four, George, Hester, Patricia, and Walter are buried together in Shiregreen, Cemetery (Sheffield)"
In March 2008 some further information came to light. GEORGE and BEATRICE had another daughter JESSIE who sadly died at the age of just two. The Burial Records for City Road Cemetery in Sheffield give the following details
MOSS, George (Cab Driver, age 42). Died at Ecclesall Workhouse; Buried on March 8, 1902 in Consecrated ground; Grave Number 9193, Section T of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
MOSS, Jessie (daughter of George, age 2).
Died at 117 Stevenson St; Buried on February 6, 1909 in Consecrated ground; Grave Number 9193, Section T of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Parent Name if Available: George Moss.
WALKER, Christina Elizabeth (Spinster, age 39).
Died at Ecclesall Union; Buried on October 31, 1908 in Consecrated ground; Grave Number 9193, Section T of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
At the moment it looks as though the GEORGE MOSS mentioned in the burial records is JESSIE'S grandfather. I have no indication of who CHRISTINA WALKER is.
ADA SANBY (1886 - 1977) - ADA 's birthday was October 24th 1886. One of her old addresses was 392 Southey Green Road, Southey, Sheffield and from the brief note her sister Rose (my Gran) left behind I would say that she was living here circa 1950. She then moved to 153 Emerson Crescent, Sheffield which is the same road her sister Beat lived on (see above). An entry in Kelly's Directory of Sheffield and Rotherham 1972 states that she is still living at the Emerson Crescent address and that her married name was SPYE . There is a record of the marriage - in the September quarter of 1908 she married a FRANCIS ARTHUR SPYE (PRO Ref Ecclesall Brierlow Vol 9C Page 658). There is an ARTHUR SPYE aged 13 in the 1901 Census living in the Nether Hallam district of Sheffield. He would have been 20 at the time of the marriage.
SANBY, Ada (Spinster, age 21, ~, residing at 168 Hoole Street).Married Francis Arthur SPYE, on July 12, 1908, by Dawson Parsons Curate of Pitsmoor (Banns) at St Mary, Walkley. SANBY - On September 20 at the Royal Hospital EDWIN aged 63, 51 Marston Road, Crookes beloved husband of Mary. Interment Crookes 3 o'clock Thursday Rest after pain patiently borne |
This would make Edwin Rose's elder brother by about four years as he was born 1889. There is also a postscript to this. In the acknowledgements section of the Sheffield Star newspaper "Mrs SANBY wishes to thank relatives, friends and neighbours for their kindness and floral tributes, also doctors and nurses of the Royal Hospital (Wilkinson Ward) also S.C.C.E in her sad bereavement"
The Burial Registers for Crookes Cemetery record the following
13653 6748 SANBY EDWIN Tramway Employee Age 63 Died Royal Hospital Date of Burial 25th September 1952 Section KK No 6441 Conc Ground Ceremony performed by W Sawle
MARY looks as though she remarried soon after Edwin's death - the following notice refers to her as being the wife of THOMAS BENNETT. Sadly though MARY died in tragic circumstances. The Sheffield Star 28th January 1955 reported
WITNESSES SOUGHT Sheffield Police are anxious for any person to come forward who saw an accident at 5.00p.m. yesterday at the junction of Leopold Street and Church Street in which Mrs Mary Bennett aged 60 of 51, Marston Road, Crookes Sheffield was knocked down by British Railways mechanical "horse". Mrs. Bennett died in the Royal Hospital. In a subsequent death notice BENNETT - On Jan 27 in accident Mary Emma (nee Womack) aged 62 years of 51 Marston Road dearly beloved wife of Thomas Bennett. Interment Crookes Cemetery Monday at 12.30. Re-united with her loved ones |
There is an entry in the Registers for the birth of a MARY EMMA WOMACK in the December quarter of 1893 (PRO Ref Wortley Volume 9C page 351). This would have meant that at the accident occurred on Thursday, January 27th 1955.
The Burial Registers for Crookes Cemetery record the following
14547 13099 MARY EMMA BENNETT Wife of Thomas Age 62 Died Leopold Street Date of Burial 31st January 1955 Section KK No 6441 Conc Ground Ceremony performed by Redfern,
She is buried with her first husband EDWIN.
The one remarkable fact about my Gran and her sisters is their longetivity. Rose was 94 when she died whilst her eldest sister Florence was 87. Beat was 91 and Ada was just two days short of her 91st birthday. For four sisters to live as long as they did says quite a bit for the Sanby constitution.
I have also posted a page on the Sanby Family in Sheffield in 1881. I have excluded one family on the grounds that they were not born in Sheffield but all the others in the Census MAY have a strong family link.
For further information on the Sanby section of the site please click here
As a footnote I believe that quite a few of my ancestors may be buried in St Mary's Cemetery. St Mary's is one of three cemeteries on the hillside between Rivelin Valley Road and Bole Hill Road. On the lower slopes there is St Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Above that is St Mary's cemetery which is the cemetery for St Mary's, Walkley (C of E). St Mary's cemetery is now closed and in many places quite overgrown. There is still an occasional burial but that is in existing family plots only.
My great grandparents EDWIN AND MARY SANBY, are buried in St Mary's Cemetery. The inscription on the headstone reads
In Loving memory of |
The burial entry for Mary Elizabeth states that she was buried on Friday 4th March 1904 and that her address at the time of her death was 166 Hoole Street Walkley Sheffield. The grave reference is G1153.
Mary with two of her daughters Florence and Ada
There is also one member of the family who died at the young age of 10. The eldest child was called CLARA and she appears in the 1881 Census as the daughter of EDWIN and ELIZABETH. I was checking the burial registers of St Mary's and came across the following entries
SANBY Clara 13 Oct 1889 10 402 South Road
