SAMUEL (1823 - 1870) and AMELIA FIDLER (1824 -
SAMUEL was born in Chelmorton, Derbyshire in 1823 whilst his future wife AMELIA was born in the same county but in the village of Holmesfield which is a village on the outskirts of Sheffield.
The first census where I was able to find SAMUEL and AMELIA was the 1851 Census and was very surprised to find them living in Crookes, Sheffield of all places. But the place where they were living was unfamiliar "171 Crookes Gardens" adjacent to Northumberland Farm House. Still SAMUEL was employed as a 27 year old coachman whilst his wife AMELIA was a year younger. Both were born in Derbyshire, SAMUEL at Chapel Mosboro, which I believe is Chelmorton near Buxton, and AMELIA, Holmesfield, a village in North Derbyshire that is about eight miles from Sheffield. Living with them is their eldest son WILLIAM FIDLER who is 3 years of age. Interestingly enough WILLIAM was born in Sheffield which means that SAMUEL had made the move from Derbyshire prior to 1848. This was confirmed when I found the following entry for Samuel and Amelia's marriage in the Registers
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page - Marriages Jun 1847 FIDDLER Samuel Sheffield Volume 22 Page 494 LOWE Amelia.
The date of the marriage was 24th May 1847 and on the marriage certificate, Samuel's occupation is given as "shearer" and his address "Hanover Street, Sheffield". Amelia's address is given as "Cherry Tree Hill." The same certificate also notes that Samuel Fidler's father was called WILLIAM FIDLER and gave his profession as Farmer. Amelia Lowe's father SAMUEL LOWE is a LABOURER. Both Samuel and Amelia were 23 years of age at the time of their marriage They had more children in the years following their marriage
Charles Fidler born 1856 and remained in Sheffield. I have located his family in the 1901 Census. It appears that he married a MARTHA JANE PALMER in the June quarter of 1877 (GRO Reference Sheffield Volume 9C Page 433) when he was just 21. His wife was 2 years younger aged 19.
The 1881 Census shows the family as follows

In White's Directory for Sheffield in 1857 there is a record for a "Samuel Fidler, Greengrocer, 67 Broomhall street, Sheffield. Whether or not it is the same SAMUEL FIDLER I do not know at the moment. But the 1861 Census reveals that SAMUEL and AMELIA FIDLER are now living 99 Broomhall Road together with their family, and SAMUEL is now a 38 year old Beerhouse Keeper.
Samuel did not appear in the next census in 1871. There is a record of a burial in Sheffield's Burngreave Cemetery

After SAMUEL died, his widow AMELIA and three of her children moved to the back of no 5 Mushroom Lane, Sheffield. The 1871 Census states

There is an indication that WILLIAM and SARAH suffered as they got older. I can't be sure if they are the same couple but in all likelihood they are. The Board of Guardians meeting in Bakewell in 1838 examined the following case
I don't know the outcome of the claim but either way it did little good for there is a record in the FREEBMD index that states
"Deaths Mar 1840 - FIDLER William Bakewell Volume 19 Page _29
