house below the Sprout(?), Gardener's Rest (PH), the South West side of Cobden View from School Lane to and including Joseph Ridall's house, School Lane from Parsonage Houses to Cobden View, Crookes Moor Rd from Spring Hill to Crookes Rd, the East side of Crookes Rd from Crookes Moor Rd to Fulwood Rd, the West side of Fulwood Rd from Crookes Rd to Godfrey

HORATIO BRIGHT (entry90) was found twenty years later in 1881 living at Lydgate Hall, Lydgate Lane, Crookes, Sheffield (FHLM 1342119 PRO ref RG11/4634/92Page20)

The above "Carte de Visite" is described by Brett Payne on his excellent website "Derbyshire Photographer Profiles" as ""Mr. H. Bright" inscribed faintly in pencil on reverse. It is possible that this is a photo of Horatio Bright (c1827-1905) a Sheffield steel manufacturer who was staying at the Palace Hotel, Fairfield, Derbyshire in April 1881.

Horatio's son SAM is also listed in the 1881 Census. He was married then and had two young daughters MARY (2) and ALICE (9 months). It seems as though there Christian names were from his mother. His wife JOSEPHINE originated from London and at 22 years of age, was five years younger than Sam. The family lived at 10 Newbould Lane in the Broomhill district of Sheffield. (FHLM 1342119 PRO ref RG11/4633/146Page37). Sam's occupation is given as Silver Plate Manufacturer (White metal)

THOMAS H JENKINSON (entry 89) had also move by 1881. The census reveals that he was living in Wood Lane Sheffield (FHLM 1342121 PRO ref RG11/4639/76Page27) which is in the Stannington area of Sheffield. He was still an architect and it looks as son ARTHUR JENKINSON had also joined the profession for he is listed as an Architects Clerk. Apart from a 20 year old servant EMMA BARKER there is no other person living at the house at the time of the census. Both census indicate that THOMAS was born in Tickhill, South Yorkshire and there is a record of a THOMAS HENRY JENKINSON being christened in Tickhill on 23rd October 1838. He was the son of THOMAS and MARIANNE JENKINSON.

THOMAS and SELINA PARK in 1881 were living at 29 Parkers Road in the adjacent Broomhill district of Sheffield (FHLM 1342117 PRO ref RG11/4627/85Page19). It is approximately a half a mile away from Spring Hill. Their sons George and Frederick were not living with the family by that time but four younger children were - Jenny (19), Catherine (16), Mary E. (11) and Thomas (14). The last three are listed as being scholars. Rather intriguingly they are three other women living with the PARK's as lodgers, two of which are teachers and the other is a scholar. All are from Devon. Incidentally, Thomas' occupation is listed as an Engineer's Manager. His wife SELINA died five years later at the age of 56 (June 1886 quarter Ecclesall Bierlow Vol 9C page 176).

The NEEDHAM's had in 1881 moved in the opposite direction, geographically speaking. The Census found the family living at

There is also the fact that John was now a merchant manager clerk whereas in 1861 he was a Spring Knife Cutler who had his own apprentice.

Likewise in 1881, WILLIAM and MARY BLACKBURN had moved to a road that is very near the one the Needham's lived on.

And finally there was the COSTELLO's. Their son-in-law CHARLES and daughter EMMA are found in the 1881 Census as

CHARLES and EMMA were married in the December quarter of 1852 (PRO Ref Sheffield Vol 9C Page 412) - the FreeBMD site gives EMMA's maiden name as EMMA CASTELLO STAINFORTH which I believe may be a transcription error

The Costello' s could not be found but given their age in 1861, they had in all probability died in the intervening twenty years

I also could not find any trace of the RAMSDEN family in 1881
