THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM OTTER - NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

When I was researching my wife's grandmother VIOLET, I discovered that her grandfather on her maternal side was called WILLIAM OTTER. The 1881 Census gives the following information on my wife's great great grandfather. The entry is

The same census also confirmed that William's wife was called ELLEN and so in March 2008 I applied for the marriage certificate for WILLIAM and ELLEN. They were married in the Parish Church in Kirkby in Ashfield at July 12th 1858, William was a 21 year old  Bachelor, and Ellen a 19 year old spinster. Both were living in Kirkby, at the time of the marriage, with William's occupation given as labourer. Ellen's maiden name and the surname of her father was a problem but after a little thought and investigation, I discovered that ELLEN's maiden name was BRADDOW, - the writing of the person who filled in the certificate was difficult to read. The dates of birth are out by a year or two compared with the 1881 Census but that is not unusual

ELLEN BRADDOW,  was the daughter of JERIMIAH BRADDOW, a collier by occupation

I then checked the 1851 Census for Hucknall (William's birthplace ) and found the following entry for a dwelling on the Notttingham Road  at Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire - HO 107/2127entry 150. The entries seem to suggest that the dwellings were tied cottages

I then checked the IGI Index and then found the following entries for baptisms - christenings

15 SEPTEMBER 1833   JANE OTTER Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham, England

15 MAY 1837   WILLIAM OTTER Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham, England

30 MAY 1849   EMMA OTTER Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham, England

I still have to check but I believe that WILLIAM and ELIZABETH were married on 30 SEPTEMBER  1828 at Linby, Nottingham, England in which case ELIZABETH's maiden name would be MELLORS. Linby is a village on the outskirts of Hucknall Torkard.

I am confident that MATTHEW and ANN are my wife's great great great great grandparents.(my wife's grandparentsx4) It places them both at Bulwell, Nottinghamshire at the turn of the nineteenth century but the key is the 1851 Census for Hucknall Torkard  which places Matthew and Ann next door to their son William and daughter in law Elisabeth
