THE FAMILY OF THOMAS and ANN MYERS (1803 - 1871)

GEORGE MYERS (my great great grandfather) was born in Wath-Upon-Dearne near Rotherham and was christened there on 10th October 1824, the son of THOMAS and ANN MYERS.

George's father THOMAS MYERS (my great great great grandfather) was born on 23rd February 1803 and was baptised at the church in Laughton En Le Morthen a month later on 27th March 1803. He was the son of WILLIAM and ELIZABETH MYERS nee BRAMHALL

His line has proved to be more complicated than I first thought. And it was not helped when I misread a transcription of a marriage record

THOMAS MYERS  married ANN STOTT June 3, 1823 in St Peter & St Paul's Parish Church, Sheffield.  She was born 1807, and died November 11, 1845 in 27 Effingham Lane, Sheffield. the cause of death on the death certificate is inflammation after childbirth. ANN is buried in St Georges Churchyard Brookhill Sheffield - Deaths Dec 1845 MYERS Annie Sheffield Vol 22 Page350

The marriage certificate states

Marriage Certificate, Sheffield Parish Church (SS Peter & Paul) - Thomas MYERS of this parish. Bachelor and Ann STOTT of the parish of Wath Spinster were married in this church by License this third day of June 1823 by me W.H.Ball. Curate. Both signed Witnesses Wm ? STOTT. Wm MYERS. Christiana CROSLAND and Joseph HUDSON the last witness was a clerk of the church.

I misread STOTT as PLATT and which meant that I failed initially to get the correct siblings for THOMAS and ANN

However once I recognised the error, I located the family in the 1841 UK Census : - 1841 Census Shales Square, Duke Street, Sheffield HO107 1336/4

My great great grandfather GEORGE MYERS is not with the family in 1841 - he is apprenticed to a tailor in West Street Sheffield.  Details of his four other brothers are as follows

HENRY² MYERS (THOMAS¹) was born 1829 in Sheffield Yorkshire, and died 1903 in Sheffield Yorkshire.  He married HARRIET DRABBLE, daughter of JOHN DRABBLE and SARAH.  She was born 1831 in Sheffield Yorkshire, and died 1893 in Sheffield Yorkshire.

JOHN MYERS (1832 - 1892)

JOHN² MYERS (THOMAS¹) was born 1832 in Sheffield.  He married SARAH MOSLEY 1851 in Sheffield.  She was born 1832 in Sheffield, and died before. 1881.

The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1874.  Daughter Anne is listed with a second name of "Isles" on shipping documentation.  They settled in Wellington where Thomas operated a business as a picture frame maker and art dealer.
