KILLED BY A RUNAWAY LORRY - BOWER ROAD CROOKESMOOR SHEFFIELD APRIL 1935

The Manchester Guardian dated 16th April 1935 carried the following report of an Inquest, which can only be described as "highly charged"

The Northern Daily Mail dated 12th April 1935 carried this report of the actual accident which occurred the previous evening

There is a postcard photograph of barber Road that was taken in the 1930's

At the centre of the photograph the road curves to the left .(just below the shop awnings). At the bend is Bower Road which joins Barber Road at a junction. That would be where little Dorothy and her friend Eileen were killed.

The verdict was not really in doubt. Quite why the girl's father, Henry Smith, took exception to the lorry's driver is not known. All the evidence pointed to the actions of the un-named boy who released the handbrake of the stationary lorry. But he was clearly incensed and held the lorry driver to account for the death of his daughter.

I do not know that outcome of the court case that the police were going to bring against the boy.
