MY FIRST FOOTBALL MATCH - SHEFFIELD UNITED v BURNLEY
SATURDAY 10th MARCH 1962
FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CUP SIXTH ROUND
Well this was the first football match I ever went to at the very tender age of nine, and what is more I went on my own. I caught the bus from Greenhill and got off at the bottom of London Road and then walked to the ground. I was football mad at the time but my dad had no interest at all in the game, and as I was the eldest I had no elder brother to take me. And so off I went. Memories are hazy but I remember standing near the front at the kop end. And I can remember the goal - it was scored by the Burnley centre-forward Ray Pointer at the Bramall Lane end. And of course the Blades lost 1 - 0!. - a score-line that would be repeated many times over the next fifty years.
What I don't remember at all is the "Physical Training Display" given by the "Butlin's Young Ladies" but I was only nine.
