Jan21 Britain's first test-tube triplets, a girl and two boys, were born to a couple in London.
Feb8 14th Winter Olympic games opens in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina). Some 1,579 athletes from 50 nations participated. The Olympic facilities have since been all but destroyed by the war in Bosnia.
Feb9 Soviet leader Yuri Andropov died. A former KGB chief, he succeeded Leonid Brezhnev in late 1982 and was in power for less than 15 months.

Mar31 Hello Dandy wins the Grand National at Aintree. Years later he was found in an appalling and distressed condition after being abandoned by his owners. Thankfully due to the work of an equine rehabilitation centre he was restored to full health and at the age of 24 is still going strong

Aug4 1984 Zola Budd accidentally tripped Mary Decker during the 3,000m in the Los Angeles Olympics to cause one of the most dramatic upsets in the history of the Games.

Sep26 Britain & China sign initial agreement return Hong Kong to China in 1997
Oct12 Two large explosions heavily damaged the Grand Hotel where British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her government ministers were staying during their Conservative Party's annual conferencen. Four died as a result but neither Thatcher nor any of her ministers were hurt. On 29th June 1985 police charged IRA member Patrick Joseph Magee with planting the bomb and he received 8 life sentences in the subsequent trial. He was released after 14 years in 1999
Oct19 A Polish Priest Jerzy Popieluszko is kidnapped and found two days later dead. At his funeral on Nov 3rd 250,000 Poles witness the Ceromony. There are strong suspicions that the murder was a conspiracy by the Polish Security forces

Nov2 Margie Velma Barfield, a convicted murderer became the first woman to be executed since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976. She was also the first woman to be executed in the US by lethal injection

Nov6 President Reagan is re-elected as the President of the United States of America in the greatest Republican landslide in history. He won 49 states against Walter Mondale/Geraldine Ferraro who stood on the Democratic ticket.

Nov30 The Tamil Tigers begin the "ethnic cleansing" of the Singalese from North and East Sri Lanka - 127 are murdered
