Feb21 US President Richard M Nixon makes his historic trip to China, the first of its kind for an American leader. Exactly three years later, Nixon's close friend, Attorney General John Mitchell, along with White House aides John Ehrlichman and HR Haldeman, were sentenced to 2 1/2 to eight years in prison for their roles in the Watergate cover-up. Nixon was impeached from office six month earlier.

May22 Ceylon becomes Republic of Sri Lanka as its constitution is ratified
  President Nixon arrived in Moscow on a week's visit -- the first U.S. president to visit the Soviet Union.

Aug4 Arthur Bremer was jailed for 63 years for shooting George Wallace, governor of Alabama.
  President Idi. Amin, declared that Uganda would expel 50,000 Asians with British passports to Britain within three months.
Aug26 Summer Olympics open in Munich, West Germany

The final Apollo mission to the moon is launched. Astronauts Schmitt, Cernan and Evans make up the crew of Apollo 17 which lands on the moon's surface on December 19th

Dec23 Rescue finally came to the survivors of a Uruguayan Air Force plane which had crashed in the Andes 72 days earlier. The 16 survivors, members of a rugby team from Montevideo, kept themselves alive by eating the flesh of their fellow passengers who had died in the crash
