Feb16	A massive sculpture by Antony Gormley is unveiled at Eighton Banks nr Gateshead. Called The Angel Of The North it cost over £800,000 and dominates the skyline
Feb24	Publisher of Hustler porn magazine Larry Flynt is acquitted of charges of defamation of character of Jerry Falwell. He was supported by various media groups who were apparently afraid that the case would have ended up as a precedent limiting freedom of the press
Mar6	After a history of 3000 years Cornish Tin Mining finally ends with the closure of the South Crofty tin mine. On the wall of the mine "Cornish lads are fishermen and Cornish lads are miners too. But when the fish and tin are gone, what are the Cornish boys to do?"
Mar19	After 400 years two women take command of ships in the Royal Navy
Mar24	At Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Two boys, ages 11 and 13, pulled a false fire alarm, and as students and teachers piled out of the building, they opened fire, killing four young girls and a 32-year-old teacher.
Mar27	US Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Viagra (by Pfizer), saying it helped about two-thirds of impotent men improve their sexual function
Mar29	Cambridge win 144th University Boat Race in record time They covered the 4.25 mile course between Putney and Mortlake in 16min19secs cutting 26 secs off the previous record

Apr17	Linda McCarthy dies of breast cancer in Tucson, Arizona
Apr19	Former Labour MP and Britain's first Minister of Sport Denis Howell dies at the age of 74. He was also the only MP to have become a football referee. Probably he was best known as the Minister for Drought in the summer of 1976
May11	India undertakes the testing of an atomic device
Jul17	Assumed remains of Russian royal family the Romanovs are reburied with honors in St Petersburg
Aug7	U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, killing 190 people.
Aug15	29 people die and over 200 people are injured when a massive car bomb explodes in Omagh town centre. A breakaway republican grouping the Real I.R.A. are believed to be the group that planned and executed the carnage
Aug20	U.S. cruise missiles hit suspected terrorist bases in Afghanistan and the Sudan
Oct16	British police place General Pinochet into house arrest during his treatment for a medical condition in Britain
Oct29	In Göteborg, Sweden, fire breaks out in a disco of a local Macedonian Society - 63 dead, over 200 injured, most of them children of refugees. Police arrests two young arsonists
Nov15	US radical activist of the 1960's Stokely Carmichael "Kwame Ture" dies at the age of 57 from prostrate cancer
Nov20	Galina Starovoitova a representative in the Russian Duma is shot near Gribopjedova Channel in St Petersberg. The likliest culprits were the factions of organised crime
